From the gallery: For the second iteration of Emily Janowick’s ritual-sculpture, “Second Light” at NADA Foreland presents images of the sunrise taken from the position of the work. The photos, bound into a vinyl book, are tied to a Delaware Blue Stone, and submerged at the bottom of a water-filled bathtub. Visitors are invited to flip through the pages of the book underwater.
For Janowick, the sculpture acts as a performative journey with her daughter to the to-be site of the work. Consecutive sunrises are homogenized by the specific landscape from which they arose over the course of one week. To encounter such a work, the viewer evaluates their own position through multiple moments in time. By viewing this landscape through a crepuscular lens, an enraptured sky acts as a distributed articulation of the mathematical sublime.
