In Wet Blanket, Janowick explores communality and connection as it pertains to grief, healing, love, and care. The installation consists of two toppled obelisks crossing one another, forming an X. X is a very apt symbol. X marks the spot in a treasure map. X, like a scar. X as in stitches across a broken landscape. X: a crossing, a meeting, an intersection. One enters the space and is immediately confronted with the scale of these two structures, which fully occupy the room. Inside the tip of each sculpture is a transducer that transforms the plywood into rudimentary speakers, which relay vibrations throughout the gallery. The transducers each play a recording, one made by Janowick and the other by her close friend James Chrzan. The sounds were captured at ten feet of elevation and recorded concurrently while Chrzan was in Malibu, CA, and Janowick was 2,641 miles away in Kure Beach, NC. As is typical in the artist’s sculptural installations, Janowick’s obelisks create both physical and sonic choreographies. The experience of the work changes based on position. Walking through the space will lead to variant, isolated experiences, mimicking the conditions of living in a siloed media landscape. It also reminds us that all experiences are shared, yet singular. We may have a communal purpose, intent, inclinations, or even lives. Still, our perspectives remain, despite it all, uniquely attached to our complex being, an alloy of singularly combined exposures, tastes, and views. Very few contexts will give someone as powerfully humbling a sense of scale as the ocean will. Listening to the rhythmic sound of waves crashing on a shore can bring solace, healing, and perspective. The soothing certitude of an everlasting occurrence is anchoring. In contrast to the ocean, obelisks are man-made monuments, erected structures celebrating victory and conquest. Refusing Western society’s principles and evolution as a positive model, Janowick presents this symbol of hegemony as inherently flawed and failing. This is the third in a series where Janowick has used the obelisk as form. Past iterations allowed literal insight into the shape, whereas the obelisks in Wet Blanket are closed. This exhibition opens just following an election and closes right after an inauguration. The work marks a distinctive spot, asking us to sit with and consider the founding mythologies and iconography of our nation while pushing our awareness toward the actual, physical land we inhabit. Spanning the width of the space, the trajectory of the stairs is countered by a floor which rises in the opposite direction. The stairs and the inclining floor meet in a V; the descension of one is met by the ascension of the other. For the exhibition chevron at International Waters, Emily Janowick articulates space with staircases that form a common icon. Entering from beneath the stairs, Janowick’s architectonic chevrons are first met from below. The steps, without risers, divide the space into columns of horizontal slits. Rising along a predetermined pathway within the body of the stairs, each passage relates its shape to the story exits of an arena vomitorium. Beneath each staircase, a sequence of monitors cast time-lapse videos of animated vines climbing and penetrating the decking of the artist’s backyard in Ridgewood, Queens. The steps, connected to the monitors with cable, are tuned as speakers to broadcast a sound piece that the artist recorded with her daughter, Shiloh Blue. In such a context, the conditions of a communicating environment are emphasized. The guided experience of any landscape is permeated by language. When architecture takes the form of a symbol, the distinction between inside and outside is transgressed. “Because the spatial relationships are made by symbols more than by forms, architecture in this landscape becomes a symbol in space rather than form in space.” Dominating the natural landscape with a semantic order, architecture creates false unities and divisions with its surroundings. Familiar forms like the staircase take on diverse meaning and narrative. The ascension of a flight of stairs can suggest a stairway to heaven; vines that creep through the cracks of a step can relate their movements to an uprising over geometric oppression. Janowick, producing videos from her backyard steps with an iPhone and Makita flashlight, connects her practice directly to her surroundings and to her daughters who recently moved away: “During the last 40 nights that my eldest daughter lived at home before she went to college, I recorded the gourd vines in our backyard growing in the darkness while she slept. Two years later, as my younger daughter prepared to move out, we grew the gourds again, repeating the ritual. I usually have made my work at night, whenever the kids were asleep. Recording these videos was the last moments of knowing when everyone went to bed.” For Janowick, the dance of a growing vine relates its movements to her daughters; the vine grows at a speed that defies observation. In her ritual-practice, Janowick as mother and artist, aligns herself with her home. A mother contains her daughters much like the home contains its inhabitants. The organization of the home transposes itself onto the family. The stairway is an architectural depiction of organized growth. Descending the steps into her backyard, Janowick finds synthesis with a vine that rises in the opposite direction. The descension of one is met by the ascension of the other. The photos, bound into a vinyl book, are tied to a Delaware Blue Stone, and submerged at the bottom of a water-filled bathtub. Visitors are invited to flip through the pages of the book underwater. For Janowick, the sculpture acts as a performative journey with her daughter to the to-be site of the work. Consecutive sunrises are homogenized by the specific landscape from which they arose over the course of one week. To encounter such a work, the viewer evaluates their own position through multiple moments in time. Bound to a weight at the bottom of the tub, Janowick invites observers to thumb through the waterproof album at arms length through crystal-clear water. To encounter this simple gesture and the sublime beauty of watching the sunrise at the place where they currently stand, the viewer must face the earth, arched over the cool white enamel of the basin. Metal bowls of different sizes were installed in a raised floor, and I removed the wall between the gallery and the street. Ice sculptures hang from the ceiling on retractable dog leashes. Depending on the weather outside, they swing and shimmy, melt into the bowls below, or refreeze into new stalactite shapes. Metal bowls of different sizes were installed in a raised floor, and I removed the wall between the gallery and the street. Ice sculptures hang from the ceiling on retractable dog leashes.
